The Eat Alabama Wild Shrimp Committee

The Eat Alabama Wild Shrimp Committee is dedicated to promoting among retailers, wholesalers and the public the importance of purchasing only Alabama wild domestic shrimp.

The statewide campaign, which started in December 2003, was developed in response to the plight of shrimpers along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Hundreds, if not thousands of shrimpers, are facing a dismal situation in which the price for their domestic catches has dropped to lows not experienced in more than 30 years. Among the factors contributing to these low prices is the influx of below-market priced foreign shrimp imports. Alabama shrimpers who have been in the business for generations are battling the worst economic slump in the industry's history.

With the awarding of a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Eat Alabama Wild Shrimp Committee now has the means to make a difference. A plan was devised to give the domestic industry an immediate boost with a tailored marketing and public relations campaign.

"We are striving to educate Alabama's wholesalers, retailers, and the public about the importance of purchasing only Alabama wild domestic shrimp," says Brett Dungan, Chairman of the Eat Alabama Wild Shrimp Committee. "We hope an increased awareness of the economic impact domestic shrimp have on Alabama's economy will give our treasured shrimp industry new life."
